In July of 1979, Robert struck her in the face multiple times, breaking her nose and fracturing her upper palate.^[1] When Dotty was discharged, she went to her mother's home and recovered there for several days. Several months later, in November 1979, she was admitted to hospital after being concussed and with multiple lacerations and contusions. While admitted, she miscarried, having been 29 weeks pregnant.^[1] In January of 1980, Dotty was found on her mothers' entryway chair with broken leg bones, broken arm bones, and multiple facial, as well as abdominal, injuries. She was again admitted to the hospital. Like her previous stay, she was pregnant (26 weeks) and miscarried. She spent a significant time in the hospital recovering, not being discharged until July 1980.^[1][2] After she was discharged, she went to her mother's home to finish recovering. While there, she informed Robert that she wanted a divorce. In September 1980, her brother and mother helped her move her possessions into an apartment in Visalia off of Demaree Street.^[2][3]
